FAQ

Heating: common questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air or not heating?
It can be a thermostat setting, a clogged filter, a tripped breaker, an ignition or flame-sensor issue, or a safety control that has shut the system down. Check the thermostat, filter, and breaker, and if you ever smell gas, leave and contact your gas utility or emergency services, then connect with a heating professional.
Is a heat pump or a furnace better?
It depends on your climate, fuel costs, and existing system. Heat pumps are efficient across much of the country and double as cooling, while furnaces deliver strong heat in very cold climates. Our heat pump vs furnace guide walks through the tradeoffs.
Should I repair or replace my furnace?
Age, repair cost, efficiency, and safety all matter. A newer furnace with a minor fault is usually worth repairing; an older unit with a major or safety-related failure may be better replaced. A professional can assess your system and explain the options.
