What freezing on a mini-split actually means

Ice on a ductless indoor coil or the larger insulated refrigerant line means that part of the system has fallen below 32°F long enough for moisture from the air to freeze onto it. On a mini-split in cooling mode, that usually happens because the coil is getting too cold from low airflow or low refrigerant. In heating mode, a thin layer of frost on the outdoor unit can be normal between defrost cycles, but an outdoor unit buried in thick ice is not normal.

What you can tell from the way the ice appears

If you see ice on the indoor head and the air coming out has become weak, airflow restriction is near the top of the list because the unit is not moving enough room air across the coil. If the ice melts, the unit runs again, and then the same freeze-up returns after a short time, a refrigerant leak becomes more likely because the underlying pressure problem was never corrected. Is frost on the outdoor mini-split normal in heat mode?
