What short cycling means on a heat pump

A heat pump should usually run long enough to move the indoor temperature noticeably, not shut off again after two to five minutes. When it keeps turning on and off, the equipment is either losing its call for operation, hitting a protective safety, or dropping power to a major component like the compressor or outdoor contactor. That is different from a heat pump that runs constantly, will not cool, or is simply noisy while continuing to operate.

Clues that point to the cause

The timing matters. If the cycling began right after a thermostat change, thermostat wiring, setup, or heat-pump programming is the first suspect, especially if the installer reused old labels or changed from one brand to another. If the system stops right after a sharp click, a change in outdoor unit sound, a hot-electrical smell, or a breaker trip, that points more toward a contactor, compressor overload, or another electrical interruption rather than a normal thermostat shutoff.

If only one zone behaves this way, the issue is usually not the entire heat pump. A zone board can drop the call too quickly, or one damper can stay closed enough that the system builds abnormal temperature or pressure and shuts itself down while other zones seem normal. Homeowners often notice that the unit runs acceptably when multiple zones are calling, then begins rapid starts and stops when just one smaller zone is active.
