An air conditioner is supposed to do two jobs at once: lower temperature and condense moisture out of the air on the indoor coil. When the house feels cool enough but still sticky, the moisture-removal side of that process is not happening long enough, not happening efficiently, or the home is taking on humid air faster than the system can remove it. That is why this symptom is different from a plain cooling complaint: the thermostat can look normal while relative humidity remains uncomfortable.
How to tell the likely causes apart
Short cooling cycles are a strong clue toward an oversized system or control setup that ends cooling too quickly. Weak airflow at several vents, frost or ice on refrigerant lines, or water appearing along with reduced air movement points more toward an airflow problem or a refrigerant-related coil issue. A small amount of water near the condensate drain often points to a drain restriction or pump problem, while moisture stains on walls, ceilings, or in several rooms suggest the humidity problem is whole-home and not just a small spill at the equipment.
If water is near wiring, a furnace control compartment, or other powered equipment, avoid touching the wet area and arrange service promptly. If the home feels muggy mostly on very hot afternoons and the AC seems to run normally, return-duct leaks or building air leakage can be feeding the system outdoor moisture from an attic or crawlspace. If the indoor fan is set to ON and the home feels more clammy between cooling cycles, that setting can re-evaporate water left on the coil back into the air.
